about em
Emily Lane (Em) is a multidisciplinary self-taught artist working and living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Em has always utilized art as a mode to describe and express “indescribable” feelings, and attempt to bring a snapshot of her inner world into the physical world. She began creating digitally at the height of a long period of isolation due to chronic illness, when digital art made continuing to find a way to practice and grow her creative process and artistic expression accessible.
As she has grown in both personhood and artistic skill, she continues to explore visually capturing feelings, moods, and moments in time. Through her work, Emily explores the relationship between the way people perceive themselves and their realities, and the way people are perceived in the physical world. Emily often focuses on self portraiture, which is heavily influenced by her experiences maintaining, tearing down, and building anew a sense of self while moving through illness, healing, and personal growth.
artist statement
I have always been fascinated by the way that people visually express their realities—this influences my creative process and art, which grapples with the link between perceiving and being perceived. My work is a product of visually translating the exploration and growth of inner worlds confined to a physical body, and navigates tension between grieving and celebrating the “letting go” process that comes with growth and change.
